Knowles in Woolwich, Kent

I have tried desperately to establish the name James Knowles, Waterman in Woolwich and have only one fragment of info. from St. Mary Magdalene parish inferring that my gg grandfather was at least married to Eliza ? in that area. My g.grandfather's death cert. states that he was born there c. 1828 but I cannot find any confirmation with the limited resources at my disposal. Can anyone please help?
