You know how we all moan about tracing ancestors with common names like SMITH? Well, just read the following, taken from the "Visitation of Leicester 1619" (Harleian Society - have I got that right?)

Pedigree of CARRINGTON alias SMITH

Sr Thomas Carrington made knight by the black prince

Joh'es Carrington who named himself Smith 1446

Unfortunately no explanation!!!

I think there is something in there somewhere about Lord Carrington, whose family way back was Smith but I have not searched for it this time!
