I was told a while back that an ancestor ( family of SPRIGGINS ) went to Australia about 1851 I think..

the GANGES, is this the name of the ship?

I can not remember what part of Australia they went to. Can anyone help, is there a web site for ship lists, my interest has been sparked to find out more I wish I had more info......

I do not know why but for some reason I seem to remember the 'Ganges' as being a Royal Navy training ship. Maybe even a shorebase. I am not sure, as I say, I hope that somebody else will come forward with the answer.

The George to whom you are referring is my great-grandfather!

The family came out in 1853 and settled in Geelong, Victoria. George married Margaret Mary Byrnes in Geelong in 1874, in St Mary's Catholic Church. They moved to Richmond, a Melbourne suburb, where George died in 1910.

I have records of the Australian branches, if you are interested.

I am a descendant of James and Mary COLE who married in London about 1787 . They had 10 children and I am a descendant from their son Alfred COLE b1796.

Alfred COLE's (b1796) sister Rebecca COLE (b1804) and the youngest of the family married in 1841 George SPRIGGINS.

This George and Rebecca (nee COLE) SPRIGGINS emigrated to Geelong Australia about 1849. They were followed in 1850 by George SPRIGGINS's brother James SPRIGGINS and his wife and children who had traveled out on the Ganges in 1850 again to Geelong Australia.

I have the family tree of Alfred COLE (b1796) and am very keen to learn of the family tree of his sister Rebecca COLE (b1804) and her husband George SPRIGGINS.
