I am hopefully soon to be sending off for my first will.
Please can anyone take me through it slowly. I have tried reading the stickies but want to make sure.

I have seen on A.....Y

on the index, a will dated 1931
Probate BRISTOL
Do I have to write to the National Archives with the details or is there a way of ordering it on line.
With thanks ELMA

You cannot order copies of wills online. TNA does not have wills from this period.

Note down the complete entry in the the Probate Calendar

Details of how to apply for a copy of the will can be found via H.M.Court Service web-site (http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1211.htm#generalsearch) - this is the address of the London Probate Registry (http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/Search.do?court_id=365)

Do note this on the Court Service web-site - Due to a significant increase in the volume of search requests there is currently a delay in the processing of search applications at York Probate Sub Registry.

If Sutton means Sutton, Surrey, you may find it convenient to travel in person to High Holborn to order the will. There's a one hour service which means you can take the will home with you.

Thanks Geoffers and Peter
With a daughter living in London, the option of collecting it is a good idea. Can I confirm that the information on An....y is all she will need
Thanks again ELMA

Yes, plus the £5.00 fee and a lot of patience.

It's best to get there as early in the day as possible. To access the one-hour over-the-counter service she will need to submit the order before 3.00pm. On a bad day this "one-hour" service can take two hours.

Back to ordering wills.
Am I right in thinking when I look up in the Index of Wills and Administrations if I see PROBATE I will be able to get a copy.
I have been here before and can not remember which ones can be sent for.
Thanks
ELMA

You can send for anything in the calendar but there will only be a will if the magic word PROBATE is included or the word WILL (as in "administration with will").

You may have seen in another message that the one hour service for personal callers is currently suspended.

There's a new address (and a new price) if you want to apply by post.
http://www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/courts-and-tribunals/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills.htm
Scroll down to 'What if I cannot get to First Avenie House or a Registry'.

I hasten to add that the 'new price' isn't that bad - an increase of a quid. :smile5:

The 'new' price and address isn't quite new - it's been in effect since about April this year - but it's new as regards the information given earlier in the thread, so I thought I'd just mention it. :smile5:
