I have worked out from reading past messages on this forum that The National Archives is the place to find what I am looking for at WO 126 and WO 127.I had a look at TNA website and it looks promising as I am looking for Army records of my Great grandfather Edgar POWELL born 1875 Abergavenny Monmouthshire ,whom I have recently found out served with the South Wales Boarderers in the Boer War . Now my problem is how to look at TNA from waydown here in New Zealand. Do I need to get a reasearcher or can I look on line ?
Thank you

The records are not online :( I have a note that the South Wales Borderers were the 24th Foot, a regular regiment, rather than a local force - so I believe you'd need to use the Soldiers' Docments in WO97. The army isn't my strong point, so please do check this, my apologies if I'm wrong.
The Soldiers' Documents (WO97) are indexed so that you can obtain a class/piece number. I believe that you can now pay TNA to search a piece to look for a specific record; you'll have to check their website to confirm this and if the service is available it will be for a fee.
However, if you search The Catalogue (PROCAT)
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp
just enter a surname in the 'Word or Phrase' field, refine the date period to 1890-1910 (important to avoid loads of hits) and in the Series Code field, enter 'WO97'.
