Probably obvious, but how do I search sub-forums?

For example, I want to specifically search the Somerset County sub-forum.

Go to the main forum page (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/)
Click County forums
Then England
Then Somerset
In the blue bar at the top of that forum is a link that says, "Search forum". Click on that, enter key words and away you go. :smile5:

One other useful tip to remember will work not only for this site but for other large websites with multiple pages.

Type the keyword you want to search for into Google, followed by a space, followed by the word site and a colon. After the colon type the URL of the website you want to search.

So, for instance, if I wanted to find all instances of the name GILSTAIN on this site (probably all in threads of mine as no-one else is researching it ) then I would type in

Gilstain site:http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums

Obviously the whole of that line would have to go in - not just the bit that has turned into a hyperlink!

It works very well with large sites

I've just tried it and it does work. Thanks Sue

Copy and Paste the whole line below into Google and replace the XXXX with the name of a place or person you are researching

XXXXXXX site:http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums

If you're using Firefox you can also use the add-on called Search Site - saves having to remember all that or type the URL into the search box.

Thanks Arthur. It took me a little while to figure out, so in case there are other loobies like me, here is what you do with Firefox.

Click on Tools and then Add-Ons, then Get Add-ons. You will probably have to type Search Site in to get to the correct download page.

Once you have downloaded it and Firefox has restarted, you should see a little green magnifier next to the ordinary magnifier in your Google Search Box top right. When you wish to do a search of the site you are in, click on the green magnifier and it automatically brings up a Google page with the site:URL bit already there. All you have to do is add your search word at the beginning of the string

hmmm - I get all this for searching subsites, but whenever I am at the Forum page - the first bit I get when I call in - and type something in the search box it always comes up with nothing.
So obviously out of practice.
