Although I've been doing family history research for a few years, I've only found this site today! I was trying to find which parish church would have been used by a particular village prior to them having one built. As well as showing which parishes were in the area it gave the Registration District, Poor Law Union and various other bits of information. It's probably very well known to lots of you, and I just wish I'd found it earlier.

The site is part of the LDS and is http://maps.familysearch.org/

I wouldn't like to say how accurate that data is. I would recommend GenUKI as a first port of call for all such questions.

You're absolutely right Peter and GENUKI is the ultimate but ...
...when you have absolutely NO IDEA even of the names of the counties of the UK, a quick search to get you in the right area is so helpful. I know it probably sounds silly to you but I only just recently discovered where Kent was as I now have traced someone back to there (actually to Stoke Damerel). I hate to think how often I have sat and thought..."so that's where 'X' is!" Family history for me has also been a major Geography lesson too.

I'm sure that it isn't intended, but that reads as though you believe Stoke Damerel to be in Kent?

For anyone not aware of it, type 'Parloc' into a seach engine - downloading the free programme may also help those new to UK research to locate places.

I was lucky, at the Library there was an A3 size atlas of UK, every time i visited, my first move was to check it out! a sad day when I found it had been 'debitted'& sold off before I could put in abid.

The ultimate reference book here is the Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers. One to look out for in libraries or perhaps for the Christmas list (it isn't cheap).

Brilliant thank you and much much easier to use than Genuki.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, who may find navigating GENUKI rather difficult, why not use a search engine?

For example, just looking for "genuki stoke damerel" takes me straight to this page (http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/StokeDamerel/)

Or via the home page of GENUKI, look in the top right corner of the web-page and use the search page (http://www.genuki.org.uk/contents/)

The church database provides additional help in listing churches and denominations with a set radius - for example (http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churches).

There are many ways of locating information, using books and on the inter-webby-thingy

Jane, Stoke Damerel is in Devon - the Devonport area of Plymouth to be exact. My OH has some from there. PM me if you need any further info.

Thanks Chipp'n'dale,
I knew it was in Devon but somehow I had thought that Devon was in Kent too. Looking at what I'd written I realize how dumb it looks and sounds but I obviously didn't think or look hard enough. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
Geoffers,
I've never thought for doing the search for "GENUKI Stoke Damerel" (which is also narrow-minded of me).
Jane - who has corrected her notes and downloaded Parloc and still feels REALLY SILLY!

Jane, there's no call to feel silly. I wonder how many of us over here have any detailed knowledge of Australian locations? The key is to know where to look to find out and, if you're not sure, to ask -- which is one reason why these forums exist. :smile5:

Geoffers,
I've never thought for doing the search for "GENUKI Stoke Damerel"

The good thing about these forums is that everyone is willing to exchange different ideas and ways of doing things - and without trying to make folks feel silly - that way we all learn new (possibly better?) ways of doing things and hopefully move our research forward.

In the end though as Kerrywood mentions, one basic rule applies - if you don't know, ask.

Thanks all (but I still do feel silly).
