Hi there,

After a lengthy search at Kew I managed to find my Great-Grandfathers GWR personnel record. I can see that he started off as a Engine Cleaner in 1919, Fireman and then a Driver in 1940. Finally, in 1951 it lists his position as 'Mizzi'.

Could anyone help me please on what this position is? and/or what it could be an abbreviation of?

I've tried all sorts of searches, but can't find anything! Plenty of people with this surname though. :(

Is it shown clearly as `Mizzi' or is there any doubt? If so would you be able to post that part on here for the sleuths to have a look at?

I've (hopefully!) attached the section in question and boxed the 'Mizzi' reference on the image.....let me know what you think.

Looks like a reference number as per the above entries. Is it M1221, K1221, 161221 or none of these?

I would say M 1221. But I would definitely ask Swindon Library to take a look at it too, as suggested above. Swindon is a regular contributor to this forum.

Definitely M1221, I would say.

Compare the letter to that of the date "1 Mar 20" left-hand column, a few rows up.

Yes I agree. It definately looks like M1221, but worth checking with Swindon.

I believe Bruno Derrick is the expert on railway records at the National Archives. If he still works for them and hasn't been 'let go' in the various cuts, it might be worth trying to contact him.

The book My Ancestor was a Railway Worker may also be useful, if you don't already have it (obtainable through Parish Chest, I think)

I watched a"Who do you think you are" prog and one ancestor was an engine driver.
This job was the top but had to start as an Engine Cleaner.
The next position was Fireman and when a Driver`s position became availiable it was a Fireman who got it.
