I have posted this before in Australia Gen.
Mary Ann Bowden was thought to be born 1845 in Adelaide Australia, she married in Victoria to John Dent Barnes in 1865, she was 20 years of age at that time and had to have a guardian give consent to her marriage. On the marriage certificate her parents are unknown :-(
Some suggested she was not born in Adelaide at all, or could be of Aboriginal origin.
I have been checking shipping lists and came across this BOWDEN George, Elizabeth nee FAULKNER, 2 ch (Geo, My Ann?) arrived 1850-06-16 on Countess of Yarborough from London 2-15 v Plymouth 2-23 [Source:4,6,20]
Is there any way to follow what happens to this family?

The earlier thread can be found here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?63368-South-Australian-Birth-Search-Please&highlight=Mary+Ann+Bowden) to assist with info on Mary Ann Bowden.

I think this one could be one of those dead end ones, not enough information on her :-(

There must be info somewhere, perhaps in Gov't files, just a matter of finding 'where'! Her having been appointed a Guardian should lead to paper work from that time. Unless he was self appointed, (from with her Family) I wonder if a phone call to State Records will help?. I'll try that in a moment or an online check.

Is there no other known Family of Mary Ann to check with?

Why not indeed. It's good for people to see what's involved in finding Family. You never know,it may jolt some memory she didn't know she had.

so my friend has been told any records from the church would be with National Archives, I've searched the archives with no luck. Maybe the guardian wasnt court appointed but family appointed, but then would he have known the parents names?

The marriage for John Dent BARNES and Mary Ann BOWDEN was in 1865, in Victoria (as you said) reg no 1458.

If you do not have this certificate you can download it from the Victoian BMD site for about $17.50. It should tell you her parents and her birthplace (assuming she gave the information) and witnesses as well as the place of the marriage.

Cheers, Judith

A bit more - here is the death for John Dent BARNES
Jno Dent Barnes, 56
Died Maryborough, Victoria 1894 reg no 2653
Parents: Wm Barnes, Ann Dent

And for Mary Ann
Mary Annie Barnes, 53
Died; Maryborough, Victoria 1899 reg no:2461
Father's Name: Bowden Barnes (sic)

Her death certificate should also give birth date and place but, of course, it depends on the accuracy of the informant.

Recent thoughts, not happy ones. If Mary Ann was the result of an assault on her Mother, she may well have been taken from her Mother especially if very young. Father would not neccessarily been known. The child may have been placed in a Gov't institution where she could then have been 'fostered'/ ádopted'out to a family until her 16th year. (Happened in my lot)

Anothewr view, she may have been born in another State & travelled to Sth.Australia to stay with rellies or friends & not known of this.

i was hoping that someone could find details of what happened to that family that i listed of coming over on the ship, there was a child my ann which would be mary ann, i know long shot but it just doesnt sound like she was born where she thought she was. If she was indigenous there wouldnt be any trace of her birth would there?
I am probably focusing on the guardian thing, maybe it was just that she was under 21 and needed someones permission??

Difficult to say, some very sad things happened with indigenous people, because of those who 'knew better how things were done'.
I've read some genuine & tragic reports which include such.
Ponder some Families where indigenous people were employed,...free entertainment for some 'men'. Even so reports were expected to be made on employees & their welfare whether true or not.

I wasn't sure if you had the certs - hate it when they give so little info, LOL

If her dates are correct she was born 1845 and married 1865 so would have been about 20. If you think she was indigenous the AIATSIS site may give you some clues as to looking further. http://www.aiatsis.gov.au/
