Re William Stokes B. 1852 @ Kingswinford (Son of John Stokes and Elizabeth nee Beddard) and Eliza Ann Bould B. 1863 @ Tunstall (Dau of Richard Stonier Bould and Phoebe nee Booth).
William and Eliza Ann are recorded as the parents of Mary Beatrice Stokes B. 1884 Samuel Richard Stokes B. 1886 and William Stokes B. 1888 (All born at Stafford, Staffs).
I can not find a marriage between William and Eliza Ann but have found a marriage between Eliza Ann and a William Smith B abt 1855 (Father George Smith) @ Stafford in 1882. I have confirmed that it is the same Eliza Ann Bould.
I can not find a confirmed death of William Smith Bet 1882 and 1884 ( when 1st Stokes child born)
William Stokes died in Stafford Infirmary in 1890 - the informant was a Phoebe Banks - the married named of the sister of Eliza Ann.
Eliza Ann married again in 1892 to a George Burgess, on the marriage certificate Eliza An used th surname Stokes.
Any supportive information re William Strokes and Eliza Ann would be appreciated.
There are census returns showing Eliza and George and the three above Stokes children living together in Tunstall.
The 2nd child, Samuel Richard was my great grandfather, my mother does remember his mother Eliza as "Grandma Burgess"

Have you got the certificate of the Smith/Bould marriage

The simplest answer here is that his name is reported wrong.
The problem is that there are a lot of William Stokes in Stafford let alone William Smiths to try to prove that.

It could be the marriage failed pretty quickly. Divorce not being an option meant just a claimed marriage with William Stokes
It did happen a lot.

Did William Stokes leave a will ?

Hi there
Thank you for your help and advice.
I do have a certificate for the Smith/Bould marriage which shows Smith being a different person to William Stokes.
William Smith and Eliza could have divorced or he could have died it just would be nice to prove it one way or another. And tut, tut , a claimed marriage, why not! As you say it did happen a lot.
Unfortunately at this stage I can not find evidence of a will.
Thanks again
Ken
