MAIL COACH INN, Wellgate, Rotherham 1875-1885

Does anyone know how I can find the licensee of this pub between 1875-1885 please? I think it may have something to do with John Heptinstall, a Whitesmith and Beerhouse Keeper of The Crofts, Rotherham. I have searched all the Directories.

I tried a few lines on 1881 census, hasn't worked yet. Available info on Googl;e is too early or much later. Have you tried contacting the now Mail Coach Inn & asking how far back their licensing records go? If not, is there a registry held in Council archives?

Yes, contacted the Inn, they say Jane Caroline (b1857), Tom Caroline (b1877) and John Heptinstall (no other details), left there in 1884 - but no records available.

I will have to try a different route.

"Mail Coach Inn" and "Beerhouse Keeper" don't sound to me as if they really go together! Inns and beerhouses were not the same thing. When researching this sort of period, don't forget the change in the law in 1869.

The best approach is to contact Rotherham Archives and enquire about the survival of Licensing Registers (because of the 1872 Act, these run from 1873). Licensing Registers are fairly easy to work through once you get the hang of the way they are laid out.

You will probably know that a Jane Caroline married in 1877. On the same page is a John Heptinstall. Rotherham 9c-673

In 1871 Jane Caroline worked for Mr Charles edward Wynne of Sheffield at 16 Westgate Rotherham. My Wynne was a publican.

At no.2 Westgate lived Ann Burmby a widow [4]7 of Bantry Yorkshire. An Innkeeper.

Either of these addressses may have been then Mail coach Inn tho' not listed as such surprisingly

Still cannot find either person on 1881 & Mr Wynne seems to have moved on.
Perhaps John & Jane hadn't aquired the Inn by 1881.

I haven't looked at the earlier censues to check against, but in 1881 there's a family whose details match quite a lot of the above at 9 Brunswick Street, Chesterfield (RG11/3432 fo37 p16). John is an Engine Smith Striker - a clerk has inserted Black next to Smith. Ancestry have them indexed as Heplinstall, and from the image I can understand why. (I found them by searching for "Hep*l" - with names like this where there are numerous possible misspellings, wildcards are often the way to go.)

I too saw that one Arthur. The Engine bit threw me, but I guess he would fit, & striker sounds 'smithy' like.

Engine Smith Striker

AIUI an Engine Smith worked on the manufacture of engines (locomotive or stationary). The heaviest work in the process was carried out by a hammerman or Striker

Thank you for this. Jane and John, did marry in 1877. And she worked in Westgate, but I didn't know who for - so this has filled another gap.
