Will I ever get this family over the brick wall? maybe with your help.

Philemon Richards born 1808 <c> ? in or out of the County. Married Emma Rowles in 1825, she died in 1838.

They had three children,
William born 1827 <c> Castle Precincts Bristol
George born 1829 <c> Castle Precincts Bristol
Emma born 1831 <c> Castle Precincts Bristol

Emma goes on to marry Charles Granville in 1858, although I have not yet obtained any certificates I feel I'm correct about her line but will buy a marriage one later.

George is my Great Grandfather x 3, I do have certificates for his line.

Now the problem son, William. Who did he marry? received a marriage certificate yesterday with wrong father. I think he married a Sarah ? and have now found 2 Sarah's on the FreeBMD in 1859. According to the census they have 7 children so could order a birth certificate for one of them naming the parents. But will not help with naming William's father.

There are 10 marriages for William between 1845 and 1851in Bristol, I may not be correct about Sarah and can not afford to end up buying 9 certificates to prove who William's father was.

According to the family which I hope is correct the oldest child was born in 1851, the only Sarah I could find was a entry for a Sarah Ann in 1848 ( the wrong certificate I had ordered)

Could do with some advice what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

Given that occupations often run in families, could this be your William in the 1851 census of St Philip & Jacob:

HO107/1954, folio 292, page 37
10 Queen Ann Street

William RICHARDS Lodger 21 Cordwainer Bristol St Philips

He is living in the household of a Richard WAKEMAN a 40 year old Labourer.

However, this William seems to be in Torquay, Devon in the 1861 census married to an Anne, also born Bristol, and with children William, Louisa, John & Sarah J, all born in Bristol with William being the eldest shown as aged 8.

Did the information that William married a Sarah come from the family? Did Philemon perhaps leave a will which would hopefully give some clues as to where William was at that time.

Yes I,ve come across William married to Anne and in fact because he was born in Bristol and being a cordwainer thought it was my William, Anne was Anna Morgan so altered her name to Anne. But found the marriage wrong groom's father. Philemon (the father) emergrated to the USA in the 1850s and died over there.

Marriage for Emma Richards to Charles Glanvill 22 August 1858 Bristol Gloucestor lists father as John Richards...
Could you give me your George spouse name so I can check the father on their marriage as this John Richards also has a son William that marries a Sarah Northover in Bristol Gloucester in 1846 (this is also on freebmd) just wondering if father for some reason is listed as John or whether it is another family in which case you may need to rethink the marriage you think is Emmas.

Oh dear, I seem to be getting in deeper waters. No possibility that Philemon altered his name to John? no surpose not that would be to easy.

Anyway going back to George. I do have his marriage certificate and his father is definately called Philemon Richards, Cordwainer. George marries Eliza Lewis, her father is called George Lewis Wheelwright. They married in 1846.

On the 1841 census ....Philemon Richard age 35
William Richard age 15
George Richard age 10
Emma Richard age 10
Caroline Williamson age 20
Emma Williamson 1 age month
Lived at Castle Precincts Bristol.

Cannot find Philemon on the 1851 census, he emegrates to the USA in 1853. Thanks for any help
