My multi-grandfather was convicted of stealing cheese (Chesterfield) in 1843 and given a sentence of transportation, but later rescinded. He supposedly spent 7 years on a Prison Hulk "Warrior" moored at Woolrich Arsenal. He came from Eckington Derbyshire. My latest intrigue is that my great-grandgather, George Henry Cartledge was born in 1850. Jean Durbin's site.http://www.derbyscourts.com/ says he was returned in 1851. I know he was in the Eckington 1851 census.
Obviously he was a hardened soul by that time and got into trouble later. I can't find his death on BMD. I wonder if he adopted an alias.
Might I suggest for those of you who have one of these black sheep to use a site by the British Library www.newspapers.bl.uk
I was able to find numerous newspaper accounts of his trial. Obviously it isn't free, but you can narrow down the search and see if can find your black sheep.
