My 3x g/grandfather Thomas Edmondson married Mary Hawkin in Carlisle in 1831, he worked as a Steam engine maker in Liverpool (from the 1841 census), between 1843-1847 he worked in Paris France where 2 of his children were born and in the 1851 census he was in Greenock Scotland working as a railway engineer . I would like to find the company he worked for and to see if they have any relevant staff records. Can anyone help ?? PS He is not the Thomas Edmondson who invented the ticket machine.....

Do you know if your chap actually worked for a railway company, or if he worked for an engineering company which provided equipment/stock for railway companies?

Do you have birth certificates for children which give a clue?

Hi Geoffers.
In the 1841 census Thomas 's occupation is shown as 'steam engine maker' so he might possibly have been working for an engineering company. Between 1841 and the 1851 census he spent time in Paris where Annie and Cecelia 2 of his daughters were born and by the 1851 census he was living in Greenock working as a 'railway engineer'. Would the family have needed passports ? and would the girls births be registered with the British Consulate ?

No.

and would the girls births be registered with the British Consulate ?

Possibly - you can check the overseas births if you subscribe to TheGenealogist via their linked site BMDregisters.

If you are not a subscriber, you can still search BMDregisters for free and just purchase some credits to view the original records which may match.
