|help| Does anyone have information on the Army's Navy during the 19th Century? Up until 1855 the Board of Ordnance Fleet formed part of the Ordnance Board (err, right), after which it became the War Department Fleet. My GGrandfather, his father and Grandfather all served in the Fleet. The first two at HM Gunwharf, Portsmouth and the Daddy of them all on the River Shannon. Unfortunately the NA, Greenwich and the RN Museum have proved to be unforthcoming, except that at the NA I did come across a series of letters covering my GGGrandfather's application to join.
I have copies of "The Army's Navy" by David Habesch and "The Unknown Fleet" by Reg Cooley, but they skip lightly over the period in question. I had hoped that the Museum of Army Transport might be able to help, but on visiting Beverley found that it had closed down.
I am especially interested in personnel records.
