For several years I have been trying to track down the whereabouts of my gt. grandfather from birth until his marriage. (If indeed he actually was married).

My first sighting of Joseph NAISH was on the 1881 Census living at 31 Church St. Chelsea MDX. He was shown with his wife Ann and children, of which Blanch, was my grandmother. I could find no traces of birth registrations for the children until I looked for young William and found him. Eureka! I sent for his birth certificate and found his mother's name was VIGOR. (Have since found her birth and baptism details in Sussex and have a load of info on her). Son Joseph b.1867 I have since found out that he was actually James Joseph, which is why I couldn't find his birth. I have details of my grandmother from 1881 onwards.

Now...I can find no trace of a marriage between Joseph and Ann anywhere. I suppose that Joseph may have been a James like his eldest son, but even so, there isn't a listing for a marriage for Ann Vigor (as far as I can ascertain). So, I am stymied as to Joseph's fathers name. I know (from the 1901 Census shown as NASH) that he was born in Birch Hill BRK. That could also be a mis-transcription of Beech Hill!! His age is also suspect as it changes by five years in later years, which means he could have been born before 1837! I don't know when he moved to Chelsea, so would be grateful if anyone with the earlier Censuses for Chelsea which are indexed, could have a look for me. I've tried the 1851 for BRK but without his father's name can't be sure, although he did have a sister Jane which could narrow it down a bit.

I should be so grateful for any ideas as to where to look, which would have to be mostly via internet as I am a unable to travel too far. I think I am missing something and hope someone can put me straight.

Thanks.

Hi GlenysYour query caught my eye, as I too am researching the name Nash in London, though in Shadwell, not Chelsea.

I checked the 1891 census for you online at Ancestry and found the following family, which sounds like it could be yours,

Chelsea,
Joseph Nash, Head, Widower, 52, Labourer, Berks
William, Son, Single, 11, Scholar, Berks
Rose, Dau, 8, Scholar, Chelsea
Gertrude, Dau, 5, Chelsea, London
Jane, Sister, 57, General Servant, Berks, Birch Hill

And two doors away, which could be your grandmother?

Alfred Jarvis (?), Head, Married, 22, ? lawyer, Chelsea
Blance, Wife, Married, 20, Housekeeper, Chelsea

Though it doesn't give Joseph's place of birth other than as Berks, his sister's place of birth confirms what you found on the 1901 census.

I also checked the 1871 census, but couldnt' find them, however, not everthing has been indexed, so they may not be on yet.

Hi Carol

Thanks for that information. I should have said that someone sent me the same info. a while back, but it has confirmed things for me. Yes, Jarvis is my family name, Alfred is my Grandfather who was a Sawyer. Quite a comedown from a Lawyer eh!!

I really need to get back before 1881 so thanks for looking at the 1871. I shall just have to be patient until everything has been index. I keep putting this on the back-burner and bringing it out when I join something new, just in case someone is looking for the same people.

I finally had a hit with young Joseph (aka James) when a descendant of his saw one of my messages. It was great being able to at least cross some t's and dot the i's.

Thanks again for your time which is appreciated, and good luck with your Nash family.

Glenys
