Hi
I have jsut obtained the marriage certificate of my gggrandparents Thomas Ashton and Caroline Newland in 1839 (March quarter - poss Feb 10th). The writing is more difficult than most to decipher. The Church was St Pancras. I am trying to make out the street name where they lived. It looks like it begins with L -Leynom St? I wondered if anyone had any ideas - or could help direct me to somewhere where I might find out.
Thank you
Ann

Hi,
I suspect this is Bayham Place or Street, both in the Camden town area of St Pancras.

I found a Laystall Street in my 1869 London atlas.

Thank you to those of you who have looked up the possible street name. I have attached the marriage certificate, because I'm not sure either is the right one.
Best regards Ann

I have a just bought copy of the 1856 Post Office Directory for London on CD and this has a full street index. If you get a similar one (they are available for earlier years also) you can look through the index for a likely street name then go to the street listing and see whereabouts it is (the listing will tell you the roads at either end of the street and any other streets that cross it). With a map of the period you should be able to find the location and decide if it is what you are looking for.
I bought the directory CD from Archive CD Books (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_686.html).
The other usefull thing is that the directory lists the names of the 'head' at each address, so even if you only have a street name you may still be able to find the person you are interested in living at a particular house or shop.
Good luck

Hi Ann, your attachment didn't come through. You could try sending it to me via email or PM, can't promise that I'll be able to read it but I am willing to give it a go.

This website of Victorian streets, is a great help for this problem. Having looked at Ann's attachment I now think it is Seymour street, one of them...

I am having trouble sending attachments through the forum. It says I can, but seems not to let me send them.

I've had a look, it's a bit like what can you see in an ink blot! However my best guess is Leybourne Street.
