My great grandfather Joseph George came from Scotland in the late 1800s to work as a signalman on the railways. Censuses show him at Stafford Houses and he later lived at Rixton then Cadishead and family remember he worked at Glazebrook station. Have had no luck in finding any detailed records of his involvement. Would he have been mentioned on any railway records/documentation.

Any advice much appreciated
Thank you
Jean

The first step is to read this National Archives Research Guide (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=124)

The stations and area you describe I think were owned by the Cheshire Lines Committee Cadishead and Glazebrook are shown in a book I have , I dont know however if there is a web site etc. I do have a photograph of Glazebrook, in the background a signal box is visible
