View Full Version : Harmless fun!
I have started researching my family fairly recently and am now completely hooked. I thought my father's family came from Bristol/Somerset like my mother's family, but I have been intrigued to discover that they came from Huntingdonshire - right back to the late 1500s. A great great grandmother came from Devon, so I went to visit recently. She was born and baptised in Bickleigh, near Tiverton, which is a lovely village with thatched cottages on either side of the River Exe. According to a book I bought the 300 year old bridge over the Exe was the inspiration for Paul Simon's 'Bridge over Troubled Water'! Isn't it amazing what there is to be found out.

Hello Jude,
How interesting! Is that the one-way bridge? I was told a story about a car and a coach meeting in the middle. Neither driver wanted to back up, and one finally pocketed his keys and strolled off to the nearest pub for a pint. <G>
It is a lovely place. I only wish that I'd known when I was there that an ancestor was Rector (17th cent.) in a nearby village.

........... and to me it's the place where I first left my parents and husband (then my fiancee) alone together over 20 years ago. We were on holiday in the cottage attached to the castle and Lee came down from London to join us. I then left him there and went off to camp at the Sidmouth festival - rather cavellierly leaving them to it. They survived! In fact I sometimes think that he gets on better with my mother than I do!
And yes, Jude, it's completely addictive and there's no end to it - there's always something new to find no matter how long you've been searching |woohoo| and everyone has their own approach and interests which develop as their family histories grow.
Mary.
