I have been looking for my wife's GGGM Mary Henrietta Steward of Great Yarmouth and recently found that she was a member of the Steward family who were shareholders in the Norfolk brewers Steward and Patteson.
I have just received a copy of the book "Norfolk Beers from English Barley - a history of Steward and Patteson 1793-1963" by Terry Gourvish. The book includes a lot of detail on the Steward, Patteson, Morse and Finch families including family trees back to the 17th/18th centuries (as well as some info on other brewers and publicans). If anyone would like information on these families please ask.
The book has some tantalising information on the earlier Steward family apparently they were "a family of Yarmouth privateers and merchants" who can be traced back to Nicholas Steward of Well-next-the-Sea (?-c.1520).
I would be very interested in making contact with other family members or researchers of the Stewards.

A pssing thought, but if you have a brewing connection, there might be a mention of them on the excellent Norfolk Pubs website.

Hi Geoffers, thanks for the pointer - I actually contacted them early on and they gave me a lot of excellent info.
I have uncovered another intriguing thread as well. Oliver Cromwell's mother was a Steward and it turns out her family were living in Wells in the late 1500s, which makes me wonder if that family and our one are connected.
Many thanks
Murray
the excellent Norfolk Pubs website
I've searched that site before Geoffers, but have had no luck in finding an index to publicans - Is there one that I missed? I've spent hours on that site, reading about each pub one-by-one, looking for an ancestor who was supposedly a publican. :(

If it isn't too time consuming Murray, could you please check if the HYAM surname is mentioned as a publican (although I have nothing to indicate that there was a connection to any of the names you mention.) I'm looking for Charles HYAM(S). His son Thomas was supposedly born in Norwich about 1859 (according to 1891 census) but I have found no evidence, despite searching the GRO index, the 1861 census for Norwich, and census index for 1861/1871/1881/1901 |banghead| . On the marriage certificate for Thomas (1890) his father Charles is shown as deceased Publican.
Although I have only seen the surname as HYAM and HYAMS for any of my family, I have seen similar - HIAM(S), HIEM(S), HIOM(S), HYAM(S), HYEM(S), HYOM(S), HIGHAM(S), HEIGHAM(S) |banghead|
Thanks
Linda

As to looking for a specific names - have you tried the Historical Directories web site? http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/b1.asp They have a couple covering Norfolk for the mid-19th century.

Sorry, there is no mention of Hi/yam in the index of the book.
The Norfolk Pub site owner Richard Bristow is VERY helpful and sent me a heap of information from his sources so get in touch with him.
If you don't have any luck contact me directly as I have another contact who is a pub enthusiast and who also has a lot of information.
All the best
Murray
Thanks Geoffers and Murray for your responses. I will contact the site owner.
I checked the online directories a long time ago, but will have another look in case they added anything. I did find that the site is extremely slow at bringing up the images - even though I have high speed internet. I wonder if it's the same for everyone else, or just my computer?
