I wonder if anyone can help me.
I am looking for my Great Great Grandad Henry Gilbert c1837. I have found him in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Census' (I think he had died by 1901) each time his place of birth was different Redgate, Holsworthy and even Devonport, all Devon. He lived in Stoke Damerel/Devonport, Devon.
I thought his Father was William Gilbert from Holsworthy, but I order a marriage certificate and it said his Father was Samuel a Husbandsman.
Henry Gilbert married in 1884 4 days before his Son also called Henry married.
I cannot find him in the 1861 Census, he would have been with his Wife (apparently not until 1884) Elizabeth (Crimp) and Son Henry about a year old.
I ordered a Birth Certificate for the only Henry Gilbert c1837 that I could find, but it was the other one with William for a Father.
I do not know where to go from here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Jill

If you have quite a few family members from this area, you might consider purchasing the 1851 census transcript on CD, which only costs a few Pounds and is readily available from outlets. This shows a couple of Henrys born 1834 who might fit your search; and three Samuels who possibly may have been his dad. These are the details from the index:

SURNAME, Forename, Position, Born, Birthplace, Census Place
GILBERT, Henry, Serv, <1834>, Shebbear-Dev, Langtree
GILBERT, Henry, Appr, <1834>, St Sidwells Ext-DEV, Bideford

GILBERT, Samuel, Head, <1796>, Cookbury-DEV, Cookbury
GILBERT, Samuel, Head, <1810>, Clawton-Dev, Clawton
GILBERT, Samuel, Head, <1816>, Holsworthy-DEV, Hollacombe

The next step after that might be to try the 1841 census

Hi Geoffers
Thank you for your help.

The information will be very helpful.

Yes I think I may buy the 1851 Devon Census.

Through someones help on another message board I have found the Son of Henry Gilbert, also called Henry, birth. As I could never find it before. He is down as Henry Gilbert Crimp. His Mother was unmarried at the time and somewhere along the way he must have lost the Crimp. Anyway I will order the Birth Certificate and maybe that will comfirm where Henry Gilbert (Father) was actually born. Another bit of the puzzle.

Thanks once again. This is the first time I have posted on this site as I have only just joined.

Regards
Jill
