My Brother has lost his Birth Certificate (again). He said last time I got him one - IF I did, I can`t remember how to do it!
The problem is we are both adoptees.
He appears in the GRO index under his BIRTH NAME - not his current name. The page number is crossed out and replaced with an illegible handwritten number.
SO:
a) Can I actually get a cert for him - it will only be a short version as adoptees can`t have full versions.
b) What name do I put in - that in the index or his current legal name?
c) Am I better just ignoring the number and just ordering based on his current name & date of birth?
Or is there some other system for adoptees?
Thanks
Mitch

Hello Mitch
Do you mean this?
Information about ordering an Adoption Certificate is here:

Are you looking for the birth cert showing his current name or birth name?
if you are looking for the adoption cert, his current name, see the site above.
If you are looking for his birth cert, then as you know his name and place of birh you can contact the registration office where he was born, quote his name and month and year of birth and they will be able to supply a copy. I suggest that you ring them to check the cost prior to sending for it. If you are lucky they will check the records prior to you sending for it.

PS looking back at your post I have known people order their birth certificate, showing their biological parents, who were adopted who did not state this on the application who were sent the full certificate and not the short version...

Hi, yes it is his birth certificate for his current name that I am after. I was unaware that this is actually an `Adoption certificate`!
I was also unaware until I read Malcolms link that you could get a FULL Adoption Cert and not just a short one! I might just send for one for myself as well!
Thanks for your input
Mitch
PS is the `Certificate Index Reference` the standard page & vols number - ie the bit I can`t read on the index!??

If sending for the certificate from the GRO then you will need the standard reference number, which should be available on ancestry/find my past. If you know where the adoption/new birth certificate was registered then see my original post above. Send my the details by PM and I will look up the reference number for you. I need names, place of registration/birth and DOB. I hope this helps
