Some first names would be helpful too. I did a search on the 1891 census for Walton, in Bedfordshire and saw 9 matches on the first index page just for Maulden and more fro Amptil.

Hi, my great grandad was John Walton from Harlington, Bedfordshire he was married to Edith Skinner and living in Hendon, Middlesex in the 1911 census, but I have found it difficult to trace his dad and family Thank you for you reply

John Walton was in his twenties in the 1911 cenus living in Hendon, Middlesex with his wife Edith, but going backwards I got stuck. I am not sure about his parents and their parents.

Do you have John and Edith's marriage certificate? If not, that should be your first step:

Hendon district, March quarter 1902, volume 3a, page 279. Edith Helen SKINNER and John WALTON are on the same page.

That should provide the names of both their fathers and help you back a step.

Have you seen the 1891 census entry:

100 Church Lane, Westoning, Beds.

John Walton, b abt 1858 - Coachman Domestic
Mary b abt 1857 Whitwick, Beds
John b abt 1882 Harlington
Mary b abt 1879, Chillington, Northumberland
Frank b abt 1887, Westoning, Beds
Cecil b abt 1889 Westoning, Beds
Reginald b abt 1891 Westoning.

Maybe Mary (born Northumberland) is not John's Daughter, but as John was a coachman I suppose he could have been in Northumberland with his wife at some time.

Hello,

I found them by entering the details onto FreeBMD (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl). The copy certificate may be ordered from the General Register Office (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/).

John Walton age 52 born Westoning was also living in Hendon in 1911, along with a son Reginald age 20. I don't believe in coincidences. I don't think there's much doubt about the parentage of John who married Edith, although his marriage cert should confirm that his father was John. Hopefully it will also say his occupation was a coachman, as many John Waltons also had a father named John!

Despite what the Ancestry index says, to which I have added a correction, Mary Walton's birthplace in 1891 was Whitchurch, Bucks, not Whitwick Beds

Hi, you said he was in his 20s in 1911, surely it gave his exact age?
Was his wife Edith Helen bn 1883?
Did he have siblings with him also couple of kiddies in Hendon?
Thank you

Hi this is regarding John Walton age 52 born Westoning this must be my great grandad so i am grateful for this information to work on thanks to davidcarca.
Yes in the 1911 census John is 29 and Cecil his brother is 22, John and Edith have two children Albert and Cecil 3 and 1 years
Why did all the fathers, John call their children John, its too confusing but at least now i have something to work on, thanks for
the information.

Hi thanks for your help I have found the census with john and mary but i am now struggling to find their marriage
and the maiden name of mary to help me go back. Why did the dad`s called John call their sons John!

If you purchase the birth certificate of one of their children you'll get the mother's maiden name, which should make the search for their marriage easier. There's a marriage on FreeBMD in Sept 1876 in Hexham Northumberland which might be them given their first child was born in Northumberland

Between 1910 & 1912 poster said John was in his 20's.
I've found only one aged 29 bn 1882c living in Hendon.
Edith Helen, Albt Edwd 3, Cecil Hy 1.
Also Cecil George 22 and Kathleen 31.
Interesting
