I am seeking information on my grandmother’s Brother Joseph Richard SIMMS, born in Oxford, introduced to a seagoing life (1881 census) on board "The Industrial School Ship Formidable" in Bristol.
On 24th April 1893 at St Peters Church, Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, he married Elizabeth COURSE, born 1867 in Portsea, Portsmouth, father George COURSE, a naval pensioner at time. At that Point of time Joseph was an able seaman in The Royal Navy.
At the 1901 census Joseph was a boatman, HM Coastguards, living Ovendean and they had three sons Joseph G. aged 4, George J. aged 3, and Albert Kimberly aged 1. From searching "oldmaps" I found the coastguard station was at "Blackrock farm" at the eastern edge of Brighton, just where the modern pleasure boat marina is today.
I have a photo that I believe was taken during or slightly after the census, showing Joseph in uniform, with his wife and the three children. I believe photo taken in or about 1901 and given to my grandmother not long after this.
