View Full Version : Newspaper Notices in Wales
09-06-2010, 4:26 PM
My great-great grandmother died in Penyrheol. Caerphilly, Wales on March 17, 1935. She was 91. It was a bit tricky tracking her down, as she spent most of her life in Sussex and Lambeth. She went to live with a married daughter sometime after 1911.
Her name was Mary Message Oliver Jeff.
Her daughter was Sarah Oliver Jeff Knight, wife of Thomas William Knight. From the BMDs it looks like Sarah died in the Dec Q of 1954 in E. Glamorgan district.
Would newspaper records of the time likely to have mentioned their deaths (formal notice perhaps)?

It’s quite possible that there is at least a funeral notice for Mary Message Oliver Jeff in either of these newspapers:
1. Caerphilly Journal 2. South Wales Echo
There may even be a list of mourners in the Caerphilly Journal.
The Caerphilly Journal is also known as the ‘New Tredegar, Bargoed and Caerphilly Journal’ – see http://www.newsplanwales.info/view.php?id=511 .
The only libraries that hold this newspaper are:
1. British Library Newspaper Library: http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/news/blnewscoll/
2. National Library of Wales: http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=2
3. Bargoed Library – Bargoed Library is the local history library for the Caerphilly area and it has published a guide to its holdings here:
However the leaflet says that the staff can’t undertake research and it’s just possible that the library is closed at the moment. It’s probably best to email them at
firstname.lastname@example.org and see what help and advice they can give you.
Caerphilly County Borough Family History Society might also be able to advise you: http://www.clickholistic.co.uk/contact.html and there’s also the Glamorgan Family History Society: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wlsglfhs/info9.htm#when
If you get a positive response from Bargoed they might be able to check the South Wales Echo for you as well. Otherwise you could contact Cardiff Public Library who also have copies of the paper for 1935: email@example.com
I hope you have some luck with Bargoed Library.

To find a local paper that may have some notice about Sarah Oliver Jeff Knight in 1954 I think you would really need to obtain a copy of the death certificate to see where and when she died. East Glamorgan Registration District covers quite a large area including the towns of Barry and Penarth (see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/east%20glamorgan.html ).
Some of the local newspapers are listed here: http://www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/working/libraries/reference_and_information/family_and_local_history/local_newspapers.aspx
You could contact Vale of Glamorgan Libraries and see what they can do for you Libraries@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk but I very much suspect that they won’t be able to search through newspapers for you unless you can be very specific about the date.
Glamorgan Family History Society may be able to help (see my previous post).
Good luck with your hunting!

Thank you so much for all this! You have been extremely helpful. If you have any research needs here in Canada, let me know. I am in Ottawa so have access to the National Archives and the LDS branch holds Ontario vital records.

Just wanted to post that someone who contacted me through ancest*** did find a funeral notice for my great-great grandmother in a local Welsh paper. It provided some extra information for this line of mine - so grateful to other family historians who are always willing to help.
