I found the references for three death certificates I wanted on the UKBMD site. As they were quite early dates the GRO index had no ages, but the Lancashire UKBMD did have ages and sub districts (not just the main registration district) so I was fairly confident that these were the ones I wanted.
From this site you can downlowd an order form to post to the relevant Reg Office, but on this occasion I was able to order on line and went straight to the Lancashire gov website. I placed my order (and could have added extra information if I'd wanted such as a husband's name). I placed the order on the 3rd June, and paid slightly less than the cost via the GRO (ONS I should say). I had two E-mails achnowledging my order and then confirming they were being sent. I received them today (7th).
I think that's an excellent service and I E-mailed them to say thanks.
I know that not all counties are part of the scheme and I know that each Reg District is not yet complete, but I shall certainly endeavour to place my orders this way whenever I can. I was really impressed.
