My Dad lived in Shandy Street Mile End all through his childhood.

Does anyone know what school was nearest to Shandy Street please.

One possibility might be Ben Jonson School, which was in Harford Street (London E1), crossing the end of Shandy Street. The school is now apparently in a newer building, but it could be on the same site (google for more info).

Some registers and log-books, mainly for the 1930s, appear to be at the LMA (under EO/DIV 5/BEN).

Hi Kerrywood

That is certainly close. My Dad was born in 1904 so I wonder if anyone has got records for that period.

I googled the school and it is quite a large newish primary school now.

Looking at the map I noticed the Ragged School Museum close to there. Was that originally a school?

According to my list, the earliest register is 1918, so probably a bit too late.

It was founded by Dr Barnardo as Copperfield Road school, but it closed in 1908.

There will probably have been other schools in the area. The LMA holds most of the records and would be able to advise. Or for more detailed knowledge of the immediate local area you could try Tower Hamlets Local Studies (http://www.ideastore.co.uk/en/articles/local_history).
