I have a missing relative Francis Bowles/Deane. He married my gg grandmother in 1904 on the marriage certificate it has Bowles otherwise known Deane occ. inderpendent means father George Bowles Deceased. I have been looking for over 12 years now and still no record till now. I have found a Francis Bowles on the 1901 census living with a brother (head) in Pancras London with other siblings and on the 1881 census a three year old Francis living with father George and Mother Eliza Bowles. George died between 1881 and 1901. Francis has Robert as a middle name on the 1901 census and on the 1881 census it is Rupert ??
Could some one please have a look on the other census to see it there is a lead or clue and the other question does anyone know why or how (if it is the same person) can he be born with one name and marry with another.
There is another strange thing my gg grandmother remarried in 1915 as a widow but my grandmother received a letter from her surpose to be dead father two years after gg grandmother got married. Was there such a thing as divorce back then?

Have you seen the 1901 census. I just looked and could only see Francis R Bowles, not Robert. The other census just refers him as Francis R apart from 1881 where it says Rupert. There is a birth registration for a Francis Robert in 1877 showing on freebmd.

Thanks Jan and Jo for the leads. I will have a look and see if this leads me to any other clues. On the 1901 census Francis is living with his brother William and William is the head of the family and that was at no 10 Lady Margaret Road. On the 1881 census it was no 7 Lady Margaret Road. It looks like the son has bought his own home. I wonder who lives at no 7 in the 1901 census? Do you have any clues as to why or how Francis would have changed his surname from Bowles to Deane? It must have happened between 1901 and 1904 when he married my great grandmother.
Thanks again Patricia
