Hi everyone,
This is my first post here and I hope that someone is able to help me. On Ancestry.com I've found the entry for my 3rd Ggrandmother & father. I can't understand one part of it however. It says (as far as I can work out) underneath the names etc,
"Married in the District parish church (handwritten) according the the Rites and Ceremonies of the (something) Church by Licence(handwritten again)by me, registrar etc.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the (something) might be or why it would be "by Licence"?
Thank you in advance!!

usually it says
"married in the parish church according to the rites and ceremonies of the established church, by ( this could be licence) or after banns by me," and then signed by the incumbent at the time
or in a reg office instead of parish church it will say ,
"married in the register office" the rest is struck through till it gets to "by licence before me" then signed by the registrar
I think sometimes licence may be for a marriage to take place quicker, BUT if it is in a church usually there are banns read 3 times before the marriage, so by licence I hope someone else will clarify this, sometimes a hint is given on ther banns from the banns book
Hope this helps

If marrying by licence banns didn't have to be read - hence quicker - sometimes used if bride and groom came from different parishes.

However, welcome Shannon, you'll find many likeminded searchers here. I hope we can come up with some answers for you.

Have a look at Barbara Dixon's explanation of marriage certificates which may help you to interpret it.

For future reference, you'll get better quality answers if you provide sufficient details for people to find the entry and look at it for themselves.

There are a few reasons why people have to apply for a Special License to be married in a church.
1. either the bride or the groom is a foreign national
2. the banns have not been read or have been read incorrectly
3. the couple have no connection whatsoever with the church they want to be married in and are unable (or unwilling) to fulfil the qualifying connection criteria.
It probabaly costs more as well
