Hi all, I have been looking at the Flisher family who married one of the Smiths I am continually chasing. I was looking for Joseph H Flisher dob appx. 1914 Hammersmith/Fulham. His father should be George and his mother Kate (nee Smith). I think I have found one but it gives his mother's maiden name as Cheese which was his grandmother's (Kate's mother's) maiden name. Have i discovered some murky family secret or is this the wrong person. I can't help feeling it is something to do with the family as Cheese is quite an unusual name. Thank you

Was Emily Kate Smith born of the marriage of William Smith & Emily Cheese?

If Emily Kate was the illegitimate daughter of Emily Cheese, then her maiden name would be Cheese, not Smith.

Thanks Adele. Yes that is the same Emily Kate Smith and she could have been illigitimate but I have a marriage cert for her mum Emily Kate Cheese and William Smith dated 24/7/1884.I feel a shopping spree at GRO coming on. I think my husband suspects thst this is some sort of online bingo because of the amount of payments coming out! It is strange that Emily Kate dob 1885 Hammersmith appears on all other census as just Kate Smith. I have been on anc***** to try and find some birth details for her but no luck so far.

Could it be that when Kate registered Joseph's birth and was asked the question 'mother's maiden name?' she misunderstood and gave her mother's maiden name rather than her own (as mother of the baby)?
On free BMD there is a birth in Fulham which includes Hammersmith for an Emily Kate Smith Mar Q 1885. No Emily Kate Cheese thatr I can see so far.
I guess you may have to spend the money.....

Thanks Grisel. I think the Emily Kate Smith you found for 1885 Fulham is my one. I have been checking her mother again (Emily Kate Cheese) just to see that I'm following the right one. Apart from the census 1901 where she gives her dob as 1867 and Hammersmith, compared to other records where it is 1863 and Paddington, I'm pretty sure I have the right one.
