Does anyone know whether a death certificate would be issued and "logged" anywhere else - other than the normal BMD sites - for a person who committed suicide please? This is a follow-up post to my earlier one in "Brickwalls" for Jane Dorrell born 1857. She died sometime after 1901 but I can't find her.

Once the body was found and assuming that the body could be identified, someone who committed suicide since the commencement of civil registration would have their death registered as any other death; .
People sometimes commit suicide well away from their place of residence.
Do check for variant spellings.
Do check for late marriages.
Did her dad live until after 1901 and leave a will in which he mentions his daughter?

Thanks Geoffers,
I've checked for spelling variations and for late marriages and not found her. I'll see whether her dad left a will - but from memory I think he had passed away before her wedding in 1879. Maybe she jumped in the Thames and just floated out to sea. Who knows eh? We're all entitled to a little mystery in our lives but this is taking the biscuit!

Not sure if you have this info or not, but I couldn't locate her on the 1911 census, however I did find her daughter Amy [born 1890] living as a maid in Hampstead and having been born in Hackney.
As for 1901 she was alive, a widow occupation Tooth Brush Drawer and living in Hackney with Amy and 3 other children - all single - daughters Alice [born 1881] and Susan [born 1883] occupation for both was Corset Maker and a son James [born 1885] occupation Oil Shop Assistant.
Good luck in your search

Thanks for your trouble Colin, but, as you suspected, I have that information already. James was my grandfather. Thanks again,
Paul

Have you checked the newspapers for a 'body found' or an inquest!

I have a member of my family that committed suicide BUT I did not know that until I received the death certificate and read the 'cause of death'. I suspect there are many others that also do not know of a suicide until receipt of the certificate.
So, I would think that that unless you have a newspaper article or a passed down story or are lucky enough to know of an inquest, you would only find out upon receipt of the certificate found through the normal BMD sites.

Hi Chaps,
The Jane at Eltham isn't her Sandie - I got her death certificate and it just simply isn't her. I haven't tried newspapers yet - to be honest I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion I'll have a go.

Paul - I've done a bit of work with burial records from a marshy area on the Essex side of the Thames - and sadly there were many entries that just said "a man found drowned" or "body pulled from the river" or similar phrases - and a few that identified the body as a women too. Presumably if they had no way of being identified for burial it would be impossible for the death registration to show a name
Hope that's not what became of your Jane - but just a thought to bear in mind
Cheers

Out of curiosity I entered into Free BMD deaths with surname UNKNOWN after 1901. There were nearly 18,000!
Entering 'Hackney' as an area it reduces it to about 150 between 1901 and 1944. There are entries for Male and Female and also ages.
I don't know if it is a worthwhile exercise to eliminate males and children and see what you are left with.

Isn't it amazing what you can learn when you ask a question. Thank you so much everyone for all your help on this. I shall try sifting through the Unknowns of Hackney and see what I get.

Thanks Sue - I've checked for "Unknown" and "Hackney" for the appropraite span of dates on the BMD site and (thankfully) there are no female corpses between 1901 and 1911 that match Jane's age group. But the listings make for very sad reading - all those young bablies (age 0) breaks your heart. I'm coming to the conclusion that she couldn't afford to keep up the family home after her husband died in 1900 and moved in with another chap - became what I believe is called a "common-law wife" and is probably buried using his surname. No chance of finding that one then is there! But at least she had a companion eh.
I appreciate everyone's help on this. Thank you again.
Paul
