I am trying to learn all I can about James Spriggs and family. James is my GGG grandfather. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I'm wanting to learn where Ellen Spriggs, Sarah Anderson and son, Henry, are in 1871.
Background:
1851
James Spriggs, Ellen Spriggs (wife) and daughter Sarah were found in Kings Lynn, Norfolk Census
1861
Schedule #33: Dwelling#12:
Ellen Spriggs, head and widowed is found in Kent>Deptford, St. Paul> District 25.
Also in Dwelling #12 are:
Thomas Daly, Boarder
William Anderson, head, married, 23, labourer, born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.
Sarah, wife, married, 20, born in March, Cambridgeshire.
Henry, son, 8 mos. born in Kent, Deptford.
Thanks,
Elizabeth in California

Elizabeth,
Unfortunately you do not give enough information for anyone to help you. Can you give Ellen's age & birthplace please, and anything else that might help.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, thanks for the interest.
Ellen was born in Ireland (that's all I know) and in the 1861 Census it says she was 58. Sarah was born approximately in 1840 in March, Cambridgeshire. The 1851 Census found them in Lynn, Norfolk. The 1861 Census states that Sarah she is 20 years old.
In 1861, the Census found them in Kent, Deptford, St. Paul, District 25 on a street that looks like "Addey St."
Hope this helps. I'm on my way out to dinner. It's my birthday!!

Good Morning Janet!
WOW! There she is tucked away with the "Springs." This is very interesting because:
#1--Ellen SPRIGGS is the second wife of James.
#2--The first wife of James died in 1842 and here death certificate was signed by an Emma SPRING who lived not far away in March, Cambs.
#3--Now the question--Is Ellen SPRIGGS related to the SPRINGS? For whom is she a mother-in-law?
#4--I do not know her maiden name. Only that she was born in Ireland.
Just for the fun of it, any ideas?
Thanks also, for continuing the search for the Andersons. Little Henry, if he lived, could be the thread which ties us to living relatives in England in the 1900s.
Thanks for the help,
Elizabeth in Sonoma, California

Hello Elizabeth,
Happy belated birthday greetings!
Janet beat me to it, however looking at the 1861 I found:
RG 9, Piece 974, Folio 25b. Brampton, Huntingdonshire. Main or High St (South side).
George SPRING, Head, M, 41, Dealer in Marine Stores, Birmingham, Warwicks.
Mary, Wife, 38, March, Cambs.
George, Son, 20, Bricklayers Laborer, March, Cambs.
John, Son, 16, Agrl Laborer, March, Cambs.
Thomas, Son, 14, Agrl Laborer, March, Cambs.
Mary, Daur, 12, Scholar, Brampton, Hunts.
Fanny, Daur, 10, Scholar, Brampton, Hunts.
Emma, Daur, 8, Scholar, Brampton, Hunts.
William, Son, 5, Scholar, Brampton, Hunts.
James Charles, Son, 1, Brampton, Hunts.
Henry, Son, 11mo, Brampton, Hunts.
William SPRING, Brother, 40, Laborer, Scotland.
Sarah ABBOTT, Visitor, S, 19, Kings Ripton, Hunts.
Susan ABBOTT, Visitor, 1mo, Kings Ripton, Hunts.
There are too many matching names not for it to be them, plus you have Sarah Abbott, unmarried with child staying who must be related.
Good hunting.

Dear Steve and Janet:
You have both been ever so dear to be so helpful. Now, it seems that my major concern continues to be just where are Sarah Anderson (who should be 30 in 1871) and child Henry (who should be 10 in 1871). Sarah was born in March, Cambridgeshire and Henry in Kent, Deptford -- both being mentioned in my first request as living with head, William Anderson.
I believe Janet is planning to continue to search for Sarah and Henry. Any help is, of course, most appreciated.

Hello Elizabeth,
I am afraid I have had no luck in tracing William, Sarah and Henry after the 1861 census - they appear to have vanished without trace!! I have searched all subsequent census records and the only one that might apply is a Henry in the 1891 census as follows:
PRO Ref: RG12/495, folio 70, page 4
St Pauls, Deptford, Greenwich
Schedule 31, 63 Wotton Rd
Henry ANDERSON Boarder S 34 Machine Maker Turner Kent Deptford
The head of the household is a John T PEMBERTON who is aged 56, an Ironfounder and born in Brighton, Sussex.
This Henry then seems to disappear again as I can't find him in the 1901 census.
Sorry not to have been of more help.
Janet.

Many many thanks Janet!
The census tells us just what it tells us and sometimes that's not very much!!! I really appreciate your help. Now I'll turn my attention to checking the Free BMDs to see what I can find there. Hopefully, a death record for Ellen Spriggs in Kent. And, suppose I could look for Sarah and Henry as well.
Again, many thanks.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
The most likely scenario is that Sarah has remarried, and explains why she cannot be found in the censuses. Henry would probably be listed under his step fathers name while he was young.
Remember when you look for a likely marriage to follow up that you check both her maiden name and her first married name, she could have used either.
However it is always possible that they both died, or emigrated. This is what makes our research so interesting!
Good luck.
Steve

Steve, thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought of looking for her with a different "new" name -- as in new husband. Appreciate the help.
