Hi, I have just received a death cert, From 1858. He was a baby.. He was just 1yr old..
Cause of death - Tabes Mesenterica, 6-7months certified...
I looked up what this meant, and this is the description :
Tuberculosis of lymph glands inside the abdomen. An illness of children caused by drinking milk from cows infected with tuberculosis

I would have thought he would still be being breast fed?... What were the treatments in them days of TB?.. were there any?

Also another death cert from 1862, i received states the cause of death was phthisis pul, 6months, which again i think is another form or word for TB...

Phthisis is a form of TB, I'm not sure about Tabes Mesenterica though.

I would have thought he would still be being breast fed?... Not necessarily; there could have been a number of reasons why not: the mother could not produce enough milk, she may have been having another babe - who is to know how accurate the reference is to the child having it for 6-7 months?

What were the treatments in them days of TB?.. were there any? Not a lot - have a read of the History of Tuberculosis (http://www.micklebring.com/oakwood/ch18.htm).

One of my great uncles died of TB in 1906 at the age of 21. His occupation was "Milk Carrier" and my Gran always suspected that there was a connection.

Thanks for that link Jan, Ive had a good read through..
No they didnt live on a farm, They lived in the middle of a town centre...Ive checked Baptisms and Dad was a laborer in 1851, Also on babies baptism dad was still a Laborer, And by 1861 he was now a Greengrocer/fruiterer(?) & fishmonger... Bit of a leap!...
