hi
i wanted to order a death certificate for my 3rd great grandfather thomas hodson. the trouble was there were 2 born in that area 1yr apart 1829/1830. one died in 1884 and the other in 1888. on the 1881 census my thomas was a labourer and the other one was a butcher. so i ordered a certificate with a reference check putting down labourer as a checking point. had a email off them saying it wasn't him.so i paid the £9.25 for the other one thinking this is my man. after weeks of waiting came today guess what! occupation butcher.so i phoned them saying about the mistake and the kind lady on the other end of the phone said in so many words tuff you ordered it now you have to keep it and reorder the other one. makes me feel i want to give up the familyhistory all together.

He may have been doing something else before his death so was no longer described as a labourer - although labourer merely encompasses a whole host of different jobs. Still very frustrating though but don't give up. Hopefully the successes will outweigh the setbacks
Best wishes

No matter how hard you try sometimes the certs you order are just plain wrong especially if dates are really close. I keep all my wrong certs (not that many) and double check before ordering, to make sure I haven't already ordered it (which has happened only once). My advice is not to give up and order the other one, afterall....it's only money and a wait wasted.

Don't forget that a search of the probate calendars can sometimes help to distinguish between two deaths.

It's a shame you're out the moolah, but is the loss of 9.25 quid worth giving up? Winnie didn't give up and neither did the Tommies

With the brickwall I'm facing, the easiest course of action is to quit!!!
