I couldn't read it either so I checked Joseph James on the 1841 census. I found a Joseph married to Mary, living in White Hill. His profession is Cloth Weaver at that time.
Is this your Joseph?

Hi Sue
I am unsure, I only know what I have from the Marriage Certificate. Frederick James had a brother called William James.

Looks as though it could be weaver to me.

I checked back on the 1841:
Joseph age 38
Mary age 35
Sarah 15
Frederick 13
G ? 11
William 9
Selina 3
Charles 5
Simeon (or Simon) 3
George 3
Thomas 5 months
So there we have a Frederick and a Williaqm.

To me it looks like Father and Son were Spinners. Spinner: one who spins, as in spinners, weavers and dyers. Bear in mind that in 1841 people didn't make theit own entry on the Census returns.

It's Jane & her father who are spinners, Frederick is a gardener.

Thank you for pointing out my mistake . It's easily done, e.g. the original question was about Joseph, the Weaver.

Apologies Peter, I wasn't trying to point out your mistake maliciously.
I still don't think it says weaver as the first letter looks like an "a" and is different from the "W" in White Hall.

Hi Robin
No problem, I did get it wrong. I've looked at the 1851 Census and in Whitehill, Bradford upon Avon there is a Joseph James a Cloth Weaver. In the 1841 he is in Bradford, but Silver Street. Whitehill runs between Silver Street and Masons Lane. The Marriage was in 1848, so the 1851 one looks good to me.

I would be tempted to obtain a marriage certificate of one of his siblings to see if the father's occupation is any clearer. Also, has the dad been found on the 1851 census?

I think this is the family in 1851:
Joseph James 53
Mary James 51
William James 22
Eli James 18
Simeon James 16
George James 13
Thomas James 10
Joseph's occupation is cloth weaver.

Certainly it says "Gardener"

That's Frederick who is the gardener. It's the profession of his father Joseph the poster is unsure about. Still looks like weaver to me :smile5:

If the families that have been found in 1841 & 1851 are correct, then it probably does say weaver but we're not helped by the registrar's handwriting!

Definitely "weaver"....
The wobbly bit at the beginning of the W and the E that looks like a C cause the confusion - otherwise it's quite straightforward!
