Is there a place on the site where threads, posts, and forums are defined? I am a newcomer and not familiar with these terms. How do I find the right forum for my research interests? Paul S. Knapp

Hi Paul,

Take a look at the stickies on this (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?589-Problems-Navigating-Brit-Gen) board.

You may find this (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?49433-Quick-guide-to-posting) useful.

Basically a Forum deals with a particular subject, such as Wills or Military. Each county has its own forum, so if your ancestors came from that area you should post there. There are also general forums such as Brick Walls (what to you seems an insurmountable problem but which the experts on here might be able to solve)

A Thread is a new set of posts on a particular subject. You have just started a new thread on the subject of Definitions in the Problems Navigating Brit-Gen Forum. Your initial query was the first Post in this thread, and this reply of mine is also a post in the same thread.

Try to keep all Posts on the same subject within the same thread by using the Reply button to add further posts.

Don't worry if you go wrong. We have a dozen Moderators who can always move things to a more suitable place.

Hi Sue:

Your post on definitions is very helpful, thank you. I have already posted a query on Nicholas Knapp on the General Famiily History Forum. Now that I know he was from Suffolk how do I get this post on the Suffolk forum or do I start a new thread on the Suffolk Forum?

Thanks.
Paul

Hallo Paul

I presume you are talking about this thread (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?59118-Nicolas-Knapp-1592-1670&p=397710&highlight=#post397710)?

I have moved it to the Suffolk Forum for you. If you need a thread moved, just send a private message to a Super Moderator. A list (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?36583-Super-Moderators)of Super Moderators can be found as a sticky at the top of the Problems Navigating Brit-Gen Forum.

It is never a good idea to start two threads on the same subject in different places. Answers on one thread may not be seen by people who read the other, and confusion and duplication of effort sets in. If you are unsure where to post, the General Family History Queries Forum is good. Most members click on What's New? when they log in, and will therefore see all new threads anyway.
