I am having to use my blackberry to post this as I cannot access the Brit-Gen forum using Windows Internet Explorer, is anyone else having this issue?

Hello RobinC
I had the same problem about 8.30 this morning, I have just looged on from my office and everything is now o.k

Unfortunately the site has been down for several hours, for reasons beyond our control.

At present some members can access the site but others still can't.

Further information will no doubt be posted shortly.

Phew thought I was the only one. Couldn't log in when I got to the office and then panic set in - what else was I going to look at whilst eating brekkie????? thankfully I can now get my morning fix. Hope the gremlins disappear properly soon and that we can all rest easy.|jumphappy

This happened to me last night, and was still unavailable at 8 am this morning, glad it wasn't me and that all is now back.

I couldn't get in either, but after a couple of tries after returning from the dentist it all appeared, thank goodness.

Firefox doesn't help either!

It may be a good idea for those who are still having problems to clear their browser cache (ctrl + F5 should do it).

Sadly this is one of those things with 1and1 for hosting. Attractive prices, but not exactly the most reliable. You won't be the first to loose a site for hours on end and then go grey dealing with 1and1 customer services :(

1&1 only hold the domain name. The site is hosted by Global Gold UK and very nice, helpful people they are, too.

Something a bit odd then, as whois records show the domain is on 1and1 nameservers, with a change taking place yesterday:

domain: british-genealogy.com
created: 10-Sep-2002
last-changed: 22-Apr-2010
registration-expiration: 10-Sep-2011

nserver: ns67.1and1.co.uk
nserver: ns68.1and1.co.uk

I presume a recent nameserver change has taken place, as some whois records are showing:

british-genealogy.com NS ns1.globalgold.co.uk.
british-genealogy.com NS ns2.globalgold.co.uk

I cleaned up my registry last night and today when I saw the error notice, I thought " Oh god what have I gone and done".
Anyway I looked up error 404 on google and saw it was a server error and guessed that Bo Peep had been chucking her coffee about.
Cheers

I thought I'd picked up the "flu" :yikes: from somewhere as I was getting the 404 error from 3pm onwards yesterday but all seems well today. We all thought we'd been excommunicated! :) So glad B-G's back - I'd miss my daily reads terribly!

:hurray: to Bo for fixing everything up!

RobinC - when you reach B-G press ctrl (left side of your keyboard) plus F5 to clear old cache and cookies. Ctrl +F5 at the same time should work.

Thanks for the advice but ctrl + F5 doesn't work as it only reloads the Error 404 - Not Found page.

Thanks for the advice but ctrl + F5 doesn't work as it only reloads the Error 404 - Not Found page.

I tried CTRL+f5 and then tried clearing the cache and cookies. Nothing worked. Two hours later it did!

I was still getting 404 Not Found if I tried to enter via the british-genealogy.com URL (as opposed to the direct forum bookmark) but Pam tells me it has moved to http://british-genealogy.com/ (without the www). That may not be permanent, as I think the techies are working on it, but if you are trying to enter via that page on your laptop it might explain things

The problem with rebooting is, there isn't enough time lapse for the 'puter to dump its' memory. I usually turn it off completely and wait 10 secs before startting up from a fresh boot. For lap tops a good solution is to remove the battery and re-install it. This allows for the memory to be lost and refreshes itself on start up. But I'm not a techie guru, just that I know that these things often work.

I also noticed a Facebook icon on yesterday's page - today it is gone - was it my imagination?

Good thinking, Vanessa.

The new upgrade from vBulletin included a Facebook option, but alas, like most things from vBulletin, that didn't work either!

Thank goodness for that!
I have enough problems managing a physical garden/farm without trying to cope with an interwebby one. ;)

Although I am not geting an error message "Whats New" is spinning its wheels using IE7. Although it is working with my Vista and Firefox fine, some members are now unable to access B-G at all. I don't know how long it's been misbehaving but I've been gone 2 hours and the same 5 posts are unchanged. Weird.

Thanks "son of Hugh"........I am in Toronto, Canada and have no problem accessing the website.....but as I was reading your solution, I realized that those that can't get on here won't see it. I believe Pam knows that the IP address is the problem and is onto the one who switched them.

I know computers fairly well and did try the first Command thing.......that is when I saw I had the right IP number. But I forgot how to get out of DOS, lol. I can see Mark cringing at my calling it the "Command thing", LOL.

I have gotten in via IE7 now. It spun it's wheels a bit until I clicked on What's New and it's now fine. I have copied and pasted Ben's remedy into an email and sent it. Hope it works. Or maybe it will have righted itself.

Heather - I think you hit the Esc button (top left on keyboard) and then click on exit. I haven't done DOS for a loooong time!

You had hassles Bo. I just had withdrawal symptoms.

Oh now here is a weird thing. Just looked at the page tab for B-G and it says Page 404 not found!-

The B-G address is correct in the address bar so I will ignore the tab name.

I think it depended on your ISP rather than you browser or operating system. Hugh's son explained to us how it takes a while for changes of site location to be picked up by various servers around the world. I had been able to access the forum, but yesterday my ISP went down all day. I was able to connect to the Internet on my PC using my laptop dongle, but I couldn't access B-G at all, either on the PC or the Macbook - the dongle is a different ISP. This morning my server seems to be down again, but this time I can access B-G via the dongle. Phew!

Hopefully we should all be back now.

I read more stuff on Error 404's, after googling, than any one person needs to know. Knowing that B-G wasn't accessible on any computer in the house told techno challenged me that it wasn't my fault. (this time!)

|jumphappy Managed to get back in about 15 minutes ago, having been unable to access the site since late on Thursday evening. Bo e-mailed me instructions for the temporary fix, but I was having the same problem as RobinC, not being able to save the changes in notepad, so just had to wait until the new address found it's way to my corner of the world. Still am back now, so can stop having withdrawal symptoms.

So glad to see Brit-Gen back on the scene. I thought someone had accidently pulled/tripped over the plug on the forum from all the way over here in Australia. Have been driving my family crazy with Brit-Gen withdrawal symptoms (not a pretty sight I can tell you) and very grustrated :( (grumpy/frustrated)! My sanity is restored and I am a very happy little Vegemite!

My heart goes out to those who have had problems. I can imagine how you feel at the lack of BG.

For my part, I have no ongoing problems. "Page 404 not found" was a problem for a couple of hours on the first day but since then all is as it should be.
