Death certifcates show the primary, along with secondary causes. More detail may be found on autopsy reprts.

Normally only by buying the death certificate. You might find a clue on a gravestone.
Here lies Henry Thorn
drunk as a skunk
from the day he was born.
So maybe liver failure, then again he might have drowned in the river or been run over by the drayman's cart. ;)

Kind of reminds me of a tombstone, I saw in 1967, in Arizona.. It read as follows
"Here lies Jake Strong
A l liar and thief from the day he was born
For once, he was right but we was wrong,
We strung him up, and now he's gorn"
My apology to any ancestors of Jake.

If your ancestor died in hospital you may be able to find details in the hospital's records - see the TNA/Wellcome Library Hospitals Database (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/) to check if records exist.

OR... maybe shot by a jealous husband :2guns:

Sometimes - the cause of death is recorded in the burial register, but the most reliable way is to buy the death cert. Of course quite often the cause of death listed is a symptom, it isn't necessarily the cause of death. My gt x 2 grandfather died of "acute laryngitis" apparently, certified by a doctor.
