WILLIAM ALFRED ROBERTS AND SARAH LEICESTER

Hi,
Not sure if this is the correct place to post. Feel free to move it if you wish. I have a Marriage Cert for William Alfred Roberts to Beatrice May Holt in 1912 in St Leonards Leicester.

His father is listed also as William Alfred Roberts b.1863 a Shoe pressman living in Leicester. I think I have found him in the 1891 and 1901 Census which states he was born in Ringstead Northamptonshire (sometimes written Kingstead).

His wife is listed as Sarah born 1863-1866 depending on the census born Thurmaston Leicester.

I want to obtain a copy of their marriage cert but can not find any trace of those names marrying in those years in the Leicester area I wondered if anyone out there can assist as I would be gratful of any ideas, help or clues?

Can you get the birth certificate of the son? That will give you the name of the mother which may assist.

Thats an idea. Sometimes when you are focussed on a marriage you forget the births ! That should confirm it. Many thanks for the quick reply.

Hi Paul,

How certain are you that William senior's middle name was Alfred? I ask as I think I've found the family in 1911, William was a pressman and born in Ringstead, but his middle name is Lot. (Crown copyright, in care of TNA). The census says William and Sarah have been married for 29 years.

Here's a possible marriage ref from freebmd.

Jun qrt 1882, Leicester vol 7a page 450. William Lot Roberts and on the same indexed page Sarah Croxton.

There is a Sarah Croxton on the 1871 and 1881 censuses born Thurmaston, parents James C Croxton and Mary A Croxton, in 1881 it seems James has died and Mary has remarried to John Scott.

Certain as on the 1912 marriage cert it lists father of William Alfred Roberts as William Alfred Roberts also. They live at 92 Dunton Street Leic on 21 Dec 1912 when the marriage is, if that helps.

The 1911 can't be him, can it? He would only be twelve in 1912.

It's coincidence that your info matches ie father's occupation and place of birth, and mother's place of birth.

Alfred 21 on the 1911 Census could be William Alfred who marries in 1912 as he was born abt.1891. I think they may flit between being Williams and Alfreds !! but the marriage cert states William Alfred for both, I just can not find them ! Maybe the birth cert idea is the way forward.

Definitely go for the birth certificate - there's too many doubts and your research would be based on guesswork.

The Alfred age 21 on the 1911 was a printer's cutter.

For those that are interested the Birth Cert arrived and lists William Alfred Roberts b.1890 with the mother of Sarah Croxton. However I can only find one marriage for them where william is listed as William Lot Roberts, although that would fit with the 1911 census info from Lizzy9. Where or what the Lot name is about I don't know. So one question answered and even more new ones uncovered!!
