I'm looking for a death record and have 3 to choose from, same place and name. The years are 1838, 1841 and 1844. Can I ask the County Records office to look in the parish register for the burials to find age and occupation? Will a certificate from the GRO provide details such as cause of death and wife's name etc? Is it possible to get copies from a parish burial register after official registration began? Thanks to anyone who can clarify this for me.

Best wishes
Jillian

Hi Jillian,

If you go to Barbara Dixons excellent web site at:

http://
home.clara.net/dixons/Index.htm

you will find more information about ordering certificates than you possible need to know.

Have you checked the National Burial Index? That may give you some answers, at least the age. If you don't have access, then post the names and place, and someone may find them for you.

Thankyou Michael, I don't have any subscriptions at the moment so I guess I need to post them. Will move that to a different forum, thanks for your advice.

I take it that these are deaths found in the GRO index in Hayfield District.

Hayfield District covers quite a large area and consequently quite a few church burial registers. Record Offices may be able to check their registers for you - but - you may well find them charging you a fee as this would involve a fair bit of work for the staff. Record Offices publish fees for such research on their web-sites.

I'm pretty sure it would be St Mathews at Hayfield where 2 wives are buried, I wouldn't expect anyone to search the whole area. I've just ordered a cert for the 1838 one and have my fingers crossed! Thankyou for your reply, if it's the wrong one it's back to the parish register. Thought I'd get in before the price rise like everyone else.
