:detective:I’m looking for the birth certificate of Rose Bissell or Wallett b 1880-2 in Heath Town, Wolverhampton.

I have her marriage certificate (Dec 1903) where she gives her name as Rose Ellen Bissell, age 22, spinster, daughter of Job Bissell a miner.

I could not find a Rose Bissell daughter of Job in any census, but when searching just with Christian names in 1891 found Rose Wallett, age 8, father Job. (RG12; Piece: 2241; Folio 64; Page 7) Looking further back to follow Job, I found him in 1861 ennumerated as Job Biss Wallett age 8, son in law with Job Wallett snr and Elizabeth and younger siblings. (RG9; Piece: 1996; Folio: 78; Page: 4)

I then found this marriage

Marriages Dec 1854 Wolverhampton 6b769

Bissell Elizabeth
Burke Ann
Snape Richard
Tomlinson Sarah
Wallett Job

which led me to believe that this is in fact the same family.

I have found Rose in all censuses from 1891 to 1911, and Job from 1861- 1901 (there is a death in 1904 which fits him).

Rose used the name Wallett as her maiden name on the registrations of 2 of the 5 children born after 1912 and Bissell on the others (I don’t know what was on the certs of the 2 born before 1911). I know they are the right registrations as my father in law remembers the names.

Rose’s sisters also seem to have married as Bissell, but her brothers seem to have stayed as Wallett.

I have found probable registrations for all the siblings in the family except for Rose (all were registered as Wallett) and the gap she should fit in is between Jun q 1880 and Mar q 1885. She was not on the 1881 census, which narrows the gap a little.

I have one possible candidate for her registration, but would appreciate other pairs of eyes on this one. |help|

Thank you
Sally

There is
Rose Amelia Bissell Sept q 1881 but the district is St Olave (1d 294) which doesn't seem to fit.

There is Rosa Bissell in Sept q 1882 in Dudley as well, but although that is closer to Wolverhampton, it still doesn't seem to fit.

She consistently gives Heath Town, Wolverhampton (or variations on that) as her birth place, so I really think she should be in Wolverhampton district somewhere!

Thanks for looking

Seeing as the Bissell was shortened to Biss could the Wallett have been reduced to Wall?
Daft I know but it is the nearest name for Rose/Rosa and variations that I can see in the time frame in Wolverhampton, other than a Wallace.

For Bissell I can only see an Elizabeth though there is an Ellen Rose Bickley in June 1881.
For Wallet, a Clara, a Nancy, a Maud and an Adeline.

Sorry, I do not know the area well enough to side step to other registration districts.

Good luck

hi Mutley

The Rose Wallace Dec q 1882 is the one I thought the most likely - it seems to me to be the closest "mishearing". I shall have to get my Black country son in law to say it out loud for me and see if it's a possibility :wink5: Then I think I shall have to take a chance on it, probably with the check that her father is Job. (before they change the system in April)

Ronone - thanks for that pointer. I had the fathers from info on A***, but not the date or the church. I think I may be going back to Wolverhampton Archives after Easter :willy_nilly:

Thank you all - off to bed now especially as the hour is changing tonight! |snore|

Good night

Sally

An update

I received the Rose Wallace birth certificate yesterday (not bad given the huge volumes they have been dealing with :sweatdrop: ) And...

it's the right one

Father Job, a miner, mother Sarah formerly Jacques, born Grove St Heath Town Wolverhampton. All the right info, just the registrar mishearing.

Thanks for everyone's input on this.
