Hi all

Can anyone tell me please how to pronounce DAGUERREOTYPE? I read it as DAG-ERIO-TYPE but I'm sure this will be wrong!

Many thanks.

Try:

DA - GAIR - O - TYPE

Sounds right to me!

The way I've heard it pronounced is

DAG-ERRO-TYPE

Thank you JohnN and Geoffers. Your suggestions make sense to me as the inventor's name was obviously Dageurre, which I suppose is pronounced DAG-AIR.
I just see it with the ERIO bit in the middle when it's written down! Thanks again for putting me right.

I've only just seen this thread but I'd thought I'd add my tuppence worth. Everyone has got it more or less right, unless you are pronouncing the 'type' at the end like the 'type' of 'typewriter'. The 'ty' is not 'tie' in pronunciation, but 'tea'. It should be pronounced da (short 'a') - gair - oh - teape

The "daguerréotype" was invented by Louis Daguerre in 1835 and patented in 1839.

The 'ty' is not 'tie' in pronunciation, but 'tea'.

In French perhaps. However, the Oxford English Dictionary definitely gives the pronunciation of the final syllable as 'type' rhyming with 'gripe' (not, I suppose you might say, rhyming with 'grippe').

Zut, alors! And now I suppose you think I was trying to show off.

True, I gave the French pronunciation for the word. However, being a teacher and pedantic to boot, I had also checked it in my OED and was comforted to see that French-style pronunciation was correct.
