I have a similar sticky wicket to find...

Jo(h)anna HOWARD died in 1859 age 46
In 1851 with her husband John Davies HOWARD in Liverpool (she born France, British Subject)
In 1841 with her husband in Liverpool (she born in Lancashire - NO)
Joanna STANTON married John Davies HOWARD in Liverpool in 1829 - on IGI no father / occupation given

no other knowledge to go on except in 1841 household
Samuel (S*a*ntow?) 15 b. Lancashire (could he be a STANTON relation?)

1881 Toxteth Park, Liverpool
Mary WILSON wife 40 (prev Mrs. BURNETT, nee HOWARD - dau of John and Jo(h)anna)
Elizabeth STANTON aunt (to head of household) 63 (unmarr) b. Liverpool

then 1891 Toxteth Park
Mary WILSON wf 50
Elizabeth Stanton WILSON aunt (to head of household) (single) 73 b. Liverpool
Esther Gilbert WILSON aunt (widow) 65 b. Liverpool

Any clues to where to turn next most welcome.

You have John Davies Howard's marriage to Catherine McKenny in 1860 and his death in 1888 don't you? Catherine was 20 years his junior.
In 1861 they were living in Pitt St, and 1871 + 81 living in Granville St, L'Pool.

What is it you are trying to find? Is it the Stanton line?

Here's something interesting. There are 3 other Stanton marriages at the same church as Joanna & John:

Marriage: 25 DEC 1841 Saint Paul Saint Pauls Square, Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Perhaps they are Joanna's siblings?

According to 1851 census, Catherine Kennedy was born in Clomel Ireland.
Cannot find Mathew or be sure of John on either 1841 or 1851.
I found Caroline Stanton age 30 in 1841, living with Mary Godfrey age 65 (mother?) Where is her husband?

trying to find out who Jo(h)anna's parents are and where she was born or bapt!
