I am trying to get a marriage certificate for Henry Lehmann (born in Frankfurt 1823 ish) to Jane Bradley (born Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Notts 1842). I have found the banns on Ancestry, read in the 3 weeks up to October 11th 1868 at St Mary's Islington but can't find any record of the marriage and I need the reference to get a certificate. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi, I wonder if they married in Notts? The registration district for Kirkby in Ashfield is Basford.
A Jane Bradley was married in Basford Oct - Dec, 1868, 7b 250.
Two possible husbands' indexed - John Lee and Henry Schmann (could this be a mistranscription for Lehmann?) Worth investigating.

I have people mentioned in Banns & in the margin mention of "married elsewhere on...."
There is a marriage in Basford of Jane Bradley to Henry SCHMANN Dec. 1868 7b..250.
This is a typed image, I wonder if a misread scan may have been your Henry Lehmann?
'S' & 'L' notorious for mixups.

Waitabit, great minds think alike eh? (wink) can't be doing with looking for the wink smilie - too many to of them.
I do think the marriage we found is most likely. I can't find a Henry Schmann with wife Jane on any census.

Hi parky,
If only all registers were completed in writing to the standard of those banns! :smile5:
Note that in the banns it says Jane Bradley spinster of Kirkby Ashfield Nottingham. That would impy to me that Jane is probably planning to marry somewhere other than Islington, as she says she isn't living in Islington.
The plot thickens when you find a marriage for a Jane Bradley marrying in December quarter 1868 in Basford (Nottinghamshire) registration district. And guess which parish is in that district? Kirkby in Ashfield.
Now, I know that there ain't a Henry Lehmann listed on the same page - but there is a Henry Schmann. And the Schmann name does exist on the GRO Index but with a total of 3 marriages and one birth between 1850 and 1890, it's not exactly a common name. I would therefore be extremely willing to take a bet that Henry Schmann is in fact an atrocious mistranscription of Henry Lehmann. 'S' and 'L' are often written in error for each other, and a badly written 'e' could easily be mistaken for a 'c'. Looking at the formation of the letters in the banns should be proof enough of my theory.

I wish it to be noted that although I was the last to post the theory it's only because I'm a sloooooooow typist. Nobody had posted a reply when I started typing. Honest!

p.s. I'm sure three great minds can't be wrong! :smile5:

Same here Pam,
Parky7 are there any children whose births we can perhaps compare to the area, & find with Parents in censuses?

I just began searching and the phone rang! So I had to speak with cousin. AND YOU ALL BEAT ME to it ! I agree with Pam :) Lehmann is a terrible name for transcription errors.

Thank you all - I had noticed the Basford entry but not the Henry Schmann. I didn't actually realise that you could have banns read in one place and marry elsewhere. I will order the Basford one now - I think it's worth the risk. Will let you know.

Forgot to mention that there were no children of the marriage so no leads there.

Good luck, and yes do keep us informed. My fingers are crossed, and I do think there's a very good chance it's the right one.

Well done and thank you to all those who correctly identified Henry Schmann as Henry Lehmann. It was the right certificate. I am very impressed and grateful ....so much so that this will definitely not be the last you hear from me! Thanks again.
