Hi everyone, I've come to a bit of a stop with my family tree and so have taken time out to look at some other things I've got hanging around.
One of these was the case of John Withey, who was hung in Bristol in 1889 for the murder of his wife. I wondered where he is likely to be buried. Would it be within the grounds of the prison where he was hung?
John Withey was hung by hangman James Berry. While looking for info on the interweb, I came accross a list of people he'd hung. I noticed that the day before he hung Mr Withey, he'd been in Swansea where he'd hung someone called Thomas Allen, who was described as a Zulu!
Intrigued I looked further and I found a couple of newspaper articles about Thomas, who had been arrested for the murder of a pub landlord. The articles say that he was a Zulu but give no further information about where he might have come from or why a Zulu was living in Swansea.
Do you think he actually could have been a Zulu? Maybe he was left behind from when Ceteshwayo visited Engalnd a few years earlier because I can't think how else he got here? Or maybe he was described as a Zulu simply because he was black? Has anyone got any ideas?
Sue
