Is there a doctor in the house?

I'll kick off and wait to be put right...

1.

Mitral regurgitation 1 year(?)
Congestion of lungs 1? months
Dunno

2.

Syphilitic ossium (I think)
Necrosis
Exhaustion

The second on looks to me like Syphiltic ossium necrosis and Exhaustion. Agoogle search on the firts three words should explain what it is.

The first one is more difficult but looks like:
"illegible" regurgitation 1 year
Coughing of lungs 15 months --- Peter is right this actually says congestion not coughing
"illegible" 1 month

My guesses are:
Number 1 - Cerebral Regurgitation -1 year; Congestion of Lungs 1 ½ months; Anasarca 1 month

Number 2 - Syphilitic ossium; Necrosis; Exhaustion

Search for Archaic Medical terms for defenitions or try antiquusmorbus.com

Anasarca 1 month

Anasarca! That's the word we needed! Well done.

Anasarca is oedema associated with congestive heart failure (see mitral regurgitation etc)

You live in Kent, so it's worth making full use of the online information services provided by your public library service -

http://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/libraries/online_library_services/online_reference_library.aspx

These resources include several medical reference books.

If you live in Medway, the corresponding URL is -
http://www.medway.gov.uk/index/leisure/libraries/52757.htm

Worth bookmarking, I think

I don't understand the confusion about syphillis, Kelly.
The certificate seems to indicate that Thomas suffered with syphillis which showed up by way of sores in or around the mouth.
He would probably have contracted the disease many years earlier.
Very nasty, but probably not all that unusual in the days before penicillin.

I took it to mean syphilis of the bones.
