Free BMD gives HUDDART George
Cockermouth Sept 1838 vol 25 page 66.
UKThis fits with a household in the 1871 census for George HUDDART: George, born about 1839, Cockermouth, Black Smith [Master], but wife's name is Ann, born about 1841. Five children born 1861 to 1871: Mary, John, Margret, Elizabeth A., Jane. Mother-in-law's name is Margret ARMSTRONG, widow, 55, annuitant. Living in town of Dean Scales, Cumberland.
Reference: RG10/5241 Folio 119 Page 8
The wife's first name and potential maiden name don't fit and there's no son Thomas, but this is the only George HUDDART born c. 1839 that I can see on the census.

Thanks for the replys. My wife has his marriage cert to mary Jane Hostell and I just checked it. George was a widower but this marriage was 1864 and Thomas was born 1869 which overlaps with the 1871 census. Bit of a puzzle this one.
Thanks for the replys. My wife has his marriage cert to mary Jane Hostell and I just checked it. George was a widower but this marriage was 1864 and Thomas was born 1869 which overlaps with the 1871 census. Bit of a puzzle this one.Two possible explanations come to mind:
1. George married Mary Jane HOSTELL in 1864 but she died and he remarried by 1871 -- to Ann. ...Doesn't explain where Thomas is...
2. The real George HUDDART is in the 1871 census but hiding under an enumerator's error or a mistranscription of his surname. I did look for variations on HUDDART but didn't find anything...
AHA! They just popped up. I decided to try HUDD* and got this:
Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Civil Parish or Township / Occupation
George Hudderts 1831 Carlisle, Cumberland, England Head Toxteth Park [looks like...] Coachman Unemployed
Mary J Hudderts 1834 Carlisle, Cumberland, England Wife Toxteth Park
Mary E Hudderts 1868 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Toxteth Park
Thomas G Hudderts 1870 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Toxteth Park
81 Hill Street, Toxteth Park

Either the census takers or the transcribers had a field day with the HUDDART name. In 1881, it's recorded as HUDFORT:
Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Residence / Occupation
Mary J. Hudfort abt 1834 Carlisle, Cumberland, England Head [Widow] 46 Fletcher St, Toxteth Park Seamstress
Mary E. Hudfort abt 1868 Liverpool Daughter 46 Fletcher St, Toxteth Park Genl Servant
Thos.G. Hudfort abt 1870 Liverpool Son 46 Fletcher St, Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England Scholar
Jno.C. Hudfort abt 1876 Liverpool Son 46 Fletcher St, Toxteth Park Scholar
Source information: RG11/3636
Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 11

And, in 1891, HUDDART:
Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Residence / Occupation
Huddart, Mary J 57 Carlisle, Cumberland Head [Widow] Toxteth Park Lancashire [No occupation given]
Huddart, Thomas G 21 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Toxteth Park Lancashire [looks like...] Painter
Huddart, John O 14 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Toxteth Park Lancashire Errand Boy
31 Vickers Street, Toxteth Park [2-room dwelling]
Source information: RG12/2924
Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 8
Folio: 94
Page: 32
Here's something worth noting -- at the same address but living with another household is a boarder with the same name: Mary J. HUDDART. She's 59, a widow, no occupation given, birthplace Carlisle, Cumberland. The families she's with are named KITCHEN and McMULLAN. It appears that there are 7 people living in a 2-room dwelling.
Surely the two Mary J.s are related to each other, but how? Maybe sisters-in-law?

I am overwhelmed by the spead of your replys and the extent to which you have gone. Most remarkable and very much appreciated. I have also learned something about searching census for a name that is elusive.
