When my Grandfather married in New Zealand there is a requirement that you list your mothers maiden name.
My Grandfather duely did so, the name was Muston / Mustow.
On the Marraige certificate of my GGF /GGM it listed her Maiden name as Annie Elstone her fathers name as Thomas Elstone.
Searching thru census of 1861 onward i can not find a Annie Elstone,Annie was supposely born 1859 Buckinghamshire..
I have found a Ann Eliza Elstone Fathers name Thomas born 1850.Annie Married in 1881, my GF was born 1889.
The question i ask if Ann born 1850, would place her age at the birth 39,then she had another further 3 children.
Would this be normal? And why would my GF write the name Muston /Mustow Any thoughts.

Most women are still able to have children into their late forties si I would say that this is quite possible. As to the surname it is possible that your GF had an idea of what it was but wasn't entirley sure so put down what he thought it was, if you see what i mean.

Hi Wally. Do you have the marriage certificate or have you seen the details on a transcribed record? If the latter, it may be that the transcriber could not be sure of the last letter in the surname on the original handwritten record so entered Muston/Mustow.

Hello,
Thanks, but doesnt really help.
My GF was well educated. So when he had to enter his mothers maiden it would have entered what it was. whether it be Elstone / Mustow etc.

The birth registration for Ann Eliza Elstone was in 1856 at Eton.
That puts her at 33 years old when granddad was born. Well able to have more children.

Is it possible there was a brief marriage for Annie to a Musto? and granddad did not know she was born Elstone. The birth certificate may help. It could be her mother's maiden name. Just throwing ideas into that pot. ;)

P.S. What was the occupation for Thomas?

There is an Ann Ellstone in the 1861 census at 5 years old. She is the daughter of Thomas, an agricultural labourer and Sophia and it says she was born in Dorney. They are in Eton, parish of Burnham with several other children.

There is a possible marriage for Thomas Elstone in Dec 1843 in Eton to a Sophia Poole.
