View Full Version : Marriages in the Methodist church

I recall reading somewhere that marriages outside the Anglican Church(+Quaker Jewish) were not recognized prior to a certain date. I cannot find a marriage in the early 1820s but the children were christened in the Wesleyan Church in 1829 and showed the father's name and the mother's name as though they were unmarried. Later on my GGrandmother shows up as being married in the registry office(BMD) but I know she was a member of the Methodist church and as a Sunday school teacher I'm sure she must have been married there.
If anyone can shed light on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the info. I will clearly have to look at the records of the Wesleyan Church to see if I can learn anything further. There was a second marriage( to the sister no less!) at M/c Cath. and the record shows him as a widower. The subsequent children were also c. at the Wesleyan Church so they still maintained a connection. That will be the place to look if they have records.

In that case, he's broken the law and the second marriage is not valid.
Under marriage law as it was then, you were not permitted to marry your late wife's sister.
I have one who broke the law too ....... this is an extract from his Will:
And whereas my dear wife or reputed wife Caroline Ellinor Orford formerly Caroline Ellinor Woolhouse spinster to whom I was married in the year 1883 at the Parish Church of All Souls Newington Butts in the County of Surrey and by whom I have had children is the sister of my late wife Alice Grant otherwise Salmon and I sincerely hope and trust that the law with relation to such marriages may be speedily altered making the same perfectly legal and valid

This genealogy gets more interesting all the time! Until I find that first marriage I can't be sure they ever were married. As they lived in M/c I am surprised not to find the marriage on the IGI as most of the church records at that time seem to be covered + my reading suggests that most marriages were at M/c Cathedral anyway because of having to pay the double fee for marriage.
It was surprising news to me that the law didn't allow you to marry another from the same family. What possible reason?

Its all to do with Kinship and consanguinity - and if you married someone then you had kinship affinity or something like that (looks around desperately for help because she can't remember where she read it) I think there is a list in the back of the C of E prayer book of people you can't marry.

I comes from way back in biblical times when one could not marry various relations of a person who one had had intercourse with as in those days marriage began with intercourse not with any ceremony.
It was later relaxed to the marriage being voidable but it did not invalidate the marriage then in 1835 such marriages were null and void.
This situation lasted until 1907 and the deceased wife's sister's marriage act and 1927 the deceased brother's widow's marriage act.

If I am correct I have the christenings of my subject's children(IGI) and there was a Hannah and Elizabeth. Yes, maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and until I find that first marriage I can't prove it. With your help I'm going to give it a good try!! I plan to post the christening dates of Hannah and Elizabeth, and if this will not be too much to ask, I hope you can help.
