I have tried to start this thread 4 times and each time I am being distracted by all these amazing new smilies which I can see out of the corner of my eye!! And....they keep changing!
I just must use this one:auto: although it has no connection whatsoever to my question!

My relative did not die whist driving a car but apparently did so whist driving a tram, tramcar or a bus. I do not know what year we are talking about . Some of my father's ancestors immigrated from Ireland to Australia and others kept sailing on to NZ.
As the story goes he sufferred a heart attack, and the tram went hurtling to the bottom of the hill. I think it took place in Auckland but not entirely sure about that either.
I would assume that a story such as that would appear in a newspaper of the time.
Is it possible with this very limited informaiton to research NZ papers on line? His last name was McCULLOUGH. I was amazed to see the number of people with that name appearing on the NZ BDM ! I have a feeling that I may have more relatives in NZ than I do in OZ!

A long shot Marj - this one came up on the NZ Papers Past site - but it happened in Sydney - in November 1907 - from a boiler explosion on a tram.

The victim's last name is variously spelt - McCullough and McCoulough and frustratingly a first name isn't given.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=WH19071112.2.23&srpos=1&e=-------10--1----0McCULLOUGH+tram-all

NSW BDM's bring up this possibility -
14448/1907 MCCULLAGH RALPH M (father's name) JOHN (mother's name) AMELIA (place of registration) MARRICKVILLE

but there doesn't seem to be a similarly numbered entry for the other victim - who is probably named BARCLAY

What do you think??

Cheers
Sue

Thank you Sue for your help.

The story, that has come down the family line, is that it did happen in NZ and was caused by my relative sufferring a heart attack.
Unfortunately I should have asked my father more!! The old story.

Of course the story may have come down with errors in it so I am a bit out at sea here. I will keep the names you found on BMD as they may be relevant. I have not done a complete search on the Australian McCulloughs as yet.
Many thanks again
